About Us
In what may seem to many to be a new industry,Turners Car Radio has a long history. Indeed the company has been trading well over 60 years, which is quite remarkable in the context of the in-car entertainment industry. In 1948 we were one of the first appointed Radiomobile Car Radio dealers in the country, and the famous Radiomobile "Green Vans" were often seen around Croydon.
It all began when the company was incorporated on 1st January 1942, following the acquisition of 100% of the share capital of Bannisters (Croydon) Ltd. by E.W. and Mrs M.H. Turner. Bannisters was an established family business selling radios, gramophones and records, trading from a showroom at 156 Cherry Orchard Road, Croydon, although the Head Office was at 98 Lower Addiscombe Road where E.W.Turner's principal business was that of Motor Engineer.
The audio-related business continued to trade under the Bannisters name until, in 1954, the company consolidated its operation and moved to a new headquarters building at 95 Windmill Road, West Croydon. It was at this point that the company changed its name to Turners (Croydon) Limited and began trading as Turners Car Radio.
In 1974 the Windmill Road site was re-developed by Croydon Council and the car radio division re-located to 329 Brighton Road, South Croydon. It has now moved to Unit A3 Connaught Business Centre, 49 Imperial Way, Purley. At the same time it severed its links with the group.
The company, was controlled by the founder's grandson, Michael Turner, and is now under the new ownership of A.J.Turners & Co and, with their helpful and experienced team, are committed to achieving very high standards as they continue to sell, install and service products from the leading manufacturers of in-car electronics. These cover audio, security and the latest multimedia products that combine audio and in-car video to provide passenger entertainment in the form of feature films and video games, but also driving aids such as route navigation.
